Sunday Round Up - Tumbling Effetre Opaque Glasses

Today's post is showing three sets of Effetre opaque round glass bead sets that have been tumbled to create a natural stone like finish.
Many jewelry designers will use these with semi precious stones to create a mixed media design.
I do not use etching chemicals as I prefer a more natural process and do not like to have harsh chemicals in my studio.

Tumbling is a process of polishing or smoothing objects by placing them in a rotating barrel with abrasive media, such as sand, grit, or ceramic pellets.
The friction and impact of the media against the objects gradually wears away the surface, creating a smooth or shiny finish.
However, if the objects are made of glass, tumbling can also create an etched effect, because the abrasive media removes the glossy layer of the glass and exposes the underlying layer, which has a different refractive index.
This makes the glass look less transparent and more opaque, giving it a soft and velvety appearance.

First up, Effetre Sage Green #211 opaque glass is a type of glass that has a smooth and uniform surface, with a rich and deep green color.

It is made by adding copper oxide and iron oxide to molten glass, which gives it its opacity and hue in tones of green and brown.

Next is a favourite Effetre base glass that most beginner bead makers use for practice beads - Light Turquoise opaque # 232.
A simplicity in its blue green color allows it to be used in so many types of designs.

As it has so many traits of reactivity with other glasses, I sometimes like to create simple rounds to really show off the color.

Finally, Effetre Violet #272 opaque glass has a vibrant, rich deep purple color.
These spacers are small enough to fit in between other beads or wirework, but not too small that they disappear.

They are perfect for creating necklaces or bracelets with a variety of styles and colors.

These glasses are all very affordable and available at Nortel Glass in Toronto for less than $30 CAD a pound (based on their current online shopping portal). Reach out to Jean or Jennifer at Nortel to add or restock some of these glasses to your collection.

New Love Sonnet Bead Sets and a Few Spacers

Just a few beads to share today that I created last weekend when I fired up my BRAND NEW kiln for the first time.

In case you didn't see my Instagram or Facebook post, I purchased a BlueBird XL kiln when I was on a road trip to Toronto last month.

I was very lucky to get this beautiful berry purple colored "cadillac of kilns" which I have named Penny The Dragon.💜

My first session at the torch flew by and below are the sets created.

Starting on a base of Effetre white encased in CiM - Creation Is Messy Candlelight, my own hand mixed Pendragonfyre Love Sonnet frit was sprinkled to create these romantic beads.

The spacer beads are included in this set are made with pure CiM Candlelight.

Starting on a base of Effetre white encased in Effetre Amethyst, my own hand mixed Pendragonfyre Love Sonnet frit was sprinkled to create these romantic beads.

The spacer beads are included in this set are made with pure Effetre Amethyst.

This set of frit beads combines CiM Primavera, an opaque green with Val Cox Songbird frit.

Simple round beads within this abundant set.

Four plain spacers of Primavera complete this set.

I always include time in each session to create some simple spacer beads that are small enough for earring sets.
I find it is great way to practice consistency and heat control making multiple beads on one mandrel.

The spacer beads below are made from CiM - Creation Is Messy glasses

Atoll Misty This glass was very popular when it was introduced as a color in the 2022 CiM palette release. It is a nice minty green misty opal.

Beeswax Misty, a soft pale opal yellow that can strike to an amber depending on the time and temperature it is worked.

From the photos below, you will note the difference in the beads color and translucency in the making of these spacers.
I usually make 4-6 spacers on one mandrel, so the variety of the beads are a result of the warming and rewarming of each bead.

At the time of this post, Nortel has in stock:
- CiM Candlelight and Beeswax Misty. Atoll Misty appears to be SOLD Out
- Effetre White and Amethyst should be available.

Simple Spacers - Practicing The Technique of Consistency

From time to time, I enjoy sitting down at the torch and spending time making spacers.
It is important sometimes to completely clear the mind and focus on making groups of spacers to test my consistency in "putting glass to mandrel". Along with experimenting with new glasses, practice is important in glass bead making skills. Check out some examples I am sharing with you in this post.
The measurement of each set is noted below as measuring each bead hole to hole on 1/16mm mandrels.

CiM's Niagara Misty is a new color for 2023. It is described as a slightly bluish teal misty opal. Such a beautiful color and the glass melted smoothly in each bead.

It was the last of a rod of my test glass, so only 5 rounds in this set of spacers ranging from 6.8mm to 7.9mm.

CiM Sangre is a dense and saturated bright striking transparent red that melts beautifully and strikes consistently.

This set of 21 round spacers has beads that range in size from 6.2mm to 9mm.

CiM Howlite Ltd Run is an opaque ivory with pale blue streamers. For those familiar with the CiM color palette, this glass is a combination of CiM Buttermilk formula with CiM Midnight blue streamers.

The striations are very subtle in the finished bead in this set of 11 rounds ranging from 7.4mm to 8.8mm.

Finally, CiM Elegance Ltd Run, a true bubble gum pink that opacifies as you work it. This was a color introduced in the 2022 release. The rod itself was transparent so it was a surprise to open the kiln to find opaque beads the first time I tested it. Click here how I control tested it.

I personally like the bubble gum result in these 9 round spacers. They are bright and cheerful for any "pretty in pink" jewelry design. These measure 6.3mm to 7.8mm.

As always, I suggest you reach out to Nortel to place you glass orders. They carry an extensive selection of CiM glass as well as Double Helix, Riley Dichro and glass frit.

New Bead Sets with a Spring focus!

Can you believe that it is almost March!  For my part of the world, that is like a faint light at the end of the winter tunnel.
March brings little longer days, and hopefully some mild weather to melt away all the accumulated snow.
Here in New Brunswick Canada, we broke the record for the most accumulated snow on record in February of any year! Last time I checked we were up to 120 cm and counting!!   For those of you not in the metric world, that is 47.2 inches!

We have run out of places to move the snow out of the driveway and many neighbours are shovelling the snow off their roofs due to the heavy weight bearing on their houses!

So March is my month to think positively and bring on the sunshine and spring! The bead sets in this post are the start of my spring!

I have been playing with some silver infused murrini from Double Helix this week... and here are a couple of the groovy test beads!

These two below are on a base of CiM's blue opal, Electric Avenue.

This one is a big encased bead on a base of Double Helix Terra 2, looks like a big marble!
