Victoria Day, the first warm long weekend holiday in Canada for 2011!

For Canadians, Victoria Day long weekend is the kick off for the summer season. We have been plagued by wet, wet, and more wet weather over the past 2 weeks, so it was wonderful to see the sun today.
The rainy weather seems to put many of us lampwork artists in a bit of a creative slump, so I am looking forward to the sun to recharge us and have more unique offerings to our clients over the next weeks ahead. Here are the first of the new sets.

Blue Blue Silver Orbs
Materials: Effetre and Double Helix Glasses and 99% Fine Silver Wire

This set of 8 encased round beads were created on a base of limited edition Double Helix silver glass, Psyche Light.
This glass starts as a transparent purple, but when each bead core was wrapped in 99% fine silver wire and reduced the core transforms into a spectrum of dramatic of blues.
Each result was then captured under a thick encasement of Effetre clear glass.

Salted Citrus
Materials: Effetre and Vetrofond Glasses

These etched glass beads were created on a Effetre and Vetrofond bases of transparent glass with clear Effetre glass frit to create a "salted" effect on the surface.
These 20 beads resemble the hues of lime, lemon and orange and blood orange! This set has lots of beads for your spring and summer creations.

These 9 handformed flat tab beads were created on a base of Effetre Yellow Apricot. Handmade twisties of Effetre Dark Rose and CiM's Hades were swirled and scrolled. The combination of the Rose and Hades brings out a silver'd sheen at different angles to compliment the pink hues. Ten Yellow Apricot spacer beads complete this one of a kind set.

The Love Sonnet beads have been etched to provide a smooth tactile feel to each bead, while leaving the dotted and sugar beads with their glossy shine. Perfect for the spring and summer season! Gunmetal is so 2011 and will be a trend for fashion into 2012 as well!

This set of 8 lentil beads was created on a base of CiM Gunmetal glass. These are glass beads, but the surface of the glass is amazing in how it transforms to a metallic surface with a range of hues from silver blues to pinks to brassy golds. The selection of beads have a mottled finish reminscent of hammered gunmetal.

OX-380 a peridot green, jewel super luster that when each bead core was wrapped in 99% fine silver wire and reduced to createthe dramatic hues of spring green and cream. Each result was then captured under a thick encasement of Effetre clear glass.

Holidays are fast approaching, are you ready?

The holidays are in full swing in my world, trying to balance time between the "day-job" and time in the glass studio. With the daylight disappearing earlier each day, it seems that I am heading to the studio most days in the dark and cold here on the east coast of Canada.

Luckily, I have wonderful studio lights and a wood burning stove that warms the studio and heats the hot cocoa for a cosy evening.

Over the fast few days, I had time to try out a few new glasses that I received over the last couple of weeks, including Double Helix's Kalypso and a new golden transparent from Effetre, aptly name 14K.

I also enjoyed spending some time making spacers. It is important sometimes to completely clear the mind and focus on making groups of spacers to test my consistency in "putting glass to mandrel". Along with experimenting with new glasses, practice is important in glass bead making skills. Check out my dark ivory and red copper green spacers..

When I was creating these beads, I had two rods of green glass, CiM's Celadon
and the new CiM Sherwood green lying on my worktable. They worked so well
with CiM's crisp clean white, Peace, that I didn't realize until after the beads
were out of the kiln, that they were a mix of the two greens!

They are a great colour combination and actually accentuate the hues
of calm greens against the gentle white glass.

My road trip this time was great, got to meet lots of people and well... despite the heat and humidity, I got a bit of shopping in also.
While riding on the lovely TTC subway, I noticed the following.... can you actually imagine that chewing gum is such a great problem in Toronto, that there is a TTC campaign to "teach" people to "properly dispose" of their used gum. I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it too, so here is the evidence! It even has the "steps" of how to spit it out, wrap in paper (provided on the sign too) & put it in the garbage.
My hotel was wonderful, had a great view of the Toronto downtown, all the way out to Toronto island. Photo was taken with my blackberry, so quality is just so so, but believe me, it was great being up above it all.

So... as I am posting this, I am sitting in the Toronto airport relaxing in the VIP lounge until my flight in a couple of hours. I enjoy slowing the pace of rushing to the airport and then sitting in the waiting area outside the gates, while everyone is packed with little room to move or breathe.

The cost of the lounge is about the same as a couple of coffees and a sandwich from the airport vendors... and the perks are much more. Hot meal at my leisure, beverages to make everyone happy (smiles), comfy chairs, free wifi and lots of expresso and lattes.

Another study of opposites attract in this set of 16 simple dotted beads.
Eight beads in CiM's Glacier opaque with CiM's Lapis Blue dots and the
other eight with the opposing combination.

The Lapis glass created a slight metallic finish when these beads
emerged from the kiln and have a nice rich glow to them.
